12 people, dog rescued by helicopter after landslide near Mt. St. Helens stranded them

A landslide blocked part of State Road 504 near Mt. St. Helens early Sunday morning, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The slide was initially reported shortly after 2:15 a.m. on May 14, and occurred near milepost 45 on SR 504.

A trooper with Washington State Patrol confirmed to KATU that a group of visitors to Mt. St. Helens were stranded by the landslide and awaiting extraction. They had been at the observatory when the landslide wiped out the bridge.

Both directions of the road remained blocked through the day and into the morning of May 15.

WSDOT also stated that crews are currently assessing the debris' extent, and there is currently no estimated time for reopening.

People are asked to please avoid traveling in the area.
